چکیده

Surface metamerism is the phenomenon whereby two spectrally different reflectances induce the same response under fixed conditions (observer and illuminant) and induce different responses when recording conditions change. Metamerism arises due to the discrepancy between the degrees of freedom of the observer (usually three) and the degrees of freedom needed to represent surface spectral reflectances. In this paper we propose new ways to study the extent of this phenomenon. We consider spectral images, model their induced response for one observer and illuminant, identify sets of surfaces that are spectrally different but induce the same response and subsequently examine these sets when changing the illuminant. If the surfaces under the new illuminant cease to induce identical responses, they are metameric reflectances and we further investigate the magnitude of the mismatch under the new illuminant by means of the CIE Lab ΔE colour difference formula. Given this method we can determine the proportion of metameric surfaces within a scene as well as the degree to which metamerism in a scene is apparent.

Towards Higher Dimensionality in Cinema Color: Multispectral Video Systems

The current digital transition being experienced by the motion picture industry has afforded an effective increase in dimensionality in the domains of time and space, however, comparatively little effort has been put into expanding a rigorous treatment of color. All practical motion imaging systems continue to rely on the metamerism illusion wherein a particular integrated stimulation of the th...

Correcting cross-media instrument metamerism for reflectance estimation in multispectral imaging.

In multispectral imaging, the color accuracy of spectral reflectance estimation degrades significantly if the medium of test samples is different from that of calibration samples. This occurs mainly for two reasons, i.e., the different characteristics of spectral reflectances and the different measurement principles between an imaging system and a spectrophotometer. In this paper, this problem ...

Quality Metrics for Spectral Estimation

The quantitative assessment of the spectral estimation quality in multispectral imaging systems is an active field of research. The design and optimization of multispectral imaging systems are very dependent on how the cost function is selected. Several spectral estimation metrics have been used depending on the attribute it is intended to measure: visual matching, correlation of spectral curve...

Fusion of Panchromatic and Multispectral Images Using Non Subsampled Contourlet Transform and FFT Based Spectral Histogram (RESEARCH NOTE)

Image fusion is a method for obtaining a highly informative image by merging the relative information of an object obtained from two or more image sources of the same scene. The satellite cameras give a single band panchromatic (PAN) image with high spatial information and multispectral (MS) image with more spectral information. The problem exists today is either PAN or MS image is available fr...

Colorimetric- and spectral-based printing: a simple comparison

The advantage of spectral-based print reproduction with respect to colorimetric approaches is the reduction of metamerism between originals and printed colors. From a theoretical point of view, metamerism-free reproductions have a considerable advantage over traditional prints, since the visual match, traditionally established for a reference illuminant and observer, holds under any viewing con...
